If you're planning a major move this year, preparation is key. The earlier you start organizing your relocation, the more time, money, and stress you can save. Whether you’re moving across town or to another state, follow these expert moving tips to make the transition as smooth as possible.

1. Start Planning 6–8 Weeks Ahead

Begin your moving preparations at least six to eight weeks before your target move date. This gives you enough time to research, organize, and avoid last-minute surprises. Create a moving checklist to stay on track and reduce the chaos that often comes with relocating.

2. Research and Compare Moving Companies

Ask friends, family, or neighbors for trusted recommendations. A reliable moving company can make all the difference. Once you have a list, contact several companies to ask about:

  • Pricing and rate structures

  • Services offered (packing, loading, storage, etc.)

  • Licensing and insurance

  • Availability on your desired dates

Compare their estimates and online reviews to choose the mover that best fits your needs and budget.

3. Understand Moving Estimates: Binding vs. Non-Binding

Movers typically provide either binding or non-binding estimates:

  • Binding estimates guarantee the cost up front

  • Non-binding estimates can change after weighing the shipment

Be sure to show the moving company everything you plan to move, including items in the attic, basement, garage, or storage. Ask for a written explanation of the estimate and request a signed copy for your records.

4. Review the Inventory and Pack Smart

Before packing begins, the moving company will take inventory of your items. This list is essential, so make sure every item is accurately described and numbered.

Want to save on packing costs? You can pack some items yourself—but note that movers usually won’t be liable for damage to owner-packed boxes. Always check the company’s policy on this, and ask for recommendations on packing materials and best practices.
